It seems Lin Yi 林易 went on to publish a book of those pieces in early 2003 under the name Ye Tian 叶天. (I had to find out if he'd left any marks so I went looking.) The book is called 《人非海豚——一个简易环保者的反思》 (People Are Not Dolphins: Reflections of a Simple Environmentalist):

To Richard Lee, you are right, there's more to it than environmental protection. Hu Jia dared to speak out against human rights abuses. In China, that IS enough to be harassed and arrested. In China, the whole thing CAN be that simple.

This said, I'm sure they'd love to frame Hu Jia for exactly what you say, taking money from foreigners or foreign governments. That's why they took all his bank cards.

However, framing him for something and really having proof are two different things -- particularly in China. From what I know (from his close circle of friends), the only money he has comes from his mom. Let's hope it stays this way.

From what i know, it Hujia's purpose is only for environmental protection, he should have not been harassed or arrested by Chinese central government. People like environmental activists could be assaulted by local governments, but not by central government. So since he is arrested by central government, there must be somethings else that has not been reported. For example, Has he taken money from foreigners or foreign governments? anyway the whole thing is not so simple
