In 1965, Beijing demolished its ancient city wall and turned it into the 2nd Ring Road. More useful than a wall, perhaps, but not so pretty.
However, according to the February 1931 edition of Modern Mechanics, the KMT government had much bigger plans - to turn the Great Wall of China into the Very Long Road of China. Read the story here.

I have no idea if this plan really existed or, if it did, how much support it had. And I have my doubts about the artist’s idea of what it would look like. Do any historians and/or wall-lovers out there know more about this?
By the way, my one-sentence history of the 2nd Ring Road is a gross oversimplification.
