More @Uln: The needles were not infected. Psychological terrorism is another form of terrorism. Remember the white powder being mailed around during the anthrax scares in the US? That was terrorism too, even though no one died from it.

Terrorism means "causing fear." I would be pretty damn scared if someone random pricked me with a needle, whether it was infected or not.

@Uln whether it makes sense to *you* or not, it's true, so accept it.

@Rob you admit that at least 171 had actual needle marks, and can't come up with any data to support how many were attacked in Tianjin and Beijing. No matter how much you scream and yell about it, these two cases are totally different, aside from the fact that they both have something to do with needle attacks.

This is not *just* hysteria. People are getting pricked with needles, and it's not just Chinese media reporting that. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/8254278.stm

Good one, Rob. I suspected that it was all hysteria, and now I am completely sure.

@doubter - Sorry, it simply does not make sense for a terrorist attack to use needles. Why would they through the trouble of:

1- Finding enough infected needles, which can be then easily backtracked.
2- Carrying around the needles and providing the perfect evidence for the police.
3- At the moment of the attack, leaving the victim perfectly alive and in good shape to kick their ass, and later to identify them.

I am still trying to figure out where all these needles came from so quickly and who coordinated the 100+ people to go around stabbing 100+ other people.

That type of action requires some real organization, it isn't just coincidence or a bunch of kids.

Which leads me back to hysteria...

@Doubter, the number is far less certain that that. According to official announcements, from mid-August until September 4, 531 people went to hospitals in Urumqi reporting that they had been pricked. Of these, 171 had actual needle marks.

Tianjin and Beijing also had real incidents, though I don't know how many. The number may or may not be higher in Urumqi, but I would guess that false cases would be greater there because the city is already traumatized.

"The difference between these cities is that Tianjin and Beijing were not already on a knife edge when the rumors began."

The other very important difference is that this time, 476 people have *actually been pricked by hypodermic needles*. It's not "just" hysteria, although there's plenty of that too.

It's also worth noting that a hysterical connection in the minds of Han Chinese between AIDS and malicious Uyghurs is also not new. In March of 2008 China Mobile sent out a "health" text message warning people that AIDS was being spread through kebabs throughout China, which, as we all know, are mostly manned by Uyghurs. I don't have it on hand but I recall seeing a video where Han Chinese being interviewed by reporters vowed they would never eat kebabs or in some instances food from Uyghurs again. Of course, the rumor was bunk, and even if someone wanted to spread AIDS through kebabs it would be scientifically impossible, barring stabbing an AIDS infected person with a skewer and then stabbing someone else in the following five seconds.
